I like my students to have a gigantic bucket full of possible directions. I find that's incredibly useful self direction. There are times when you have the leisure to give a little thought to what you're noticing about yourself and tailor your direction. But as long as you're clear about the general framework, and I really think that I am not statement at the beginning is crucial.
