In the early church, there was a movement within the church of the desert fathers and t desert mothers. These were men and women who went out into the desert to undergo an interior martyrdom. And what you have in the church are the monastic order of benedictines. They really evolved in their own way as deeply contemplative,. liturgical and so on.
