The internet and related technologies have increased the payoff to extreme behavior. People are incentivized to act in an ever more extreme way because they're rewarded for it, says Julian Zelizer. He argues that this is a significant change from previous paradigms where powerful people were encouraged to embrace variance dampening so as not to disrupt society.
