Cost of Glory

CHAPTER

Xenophon and the Greek Outpost of Chairissipus

Alex Petkis: In Xenophon's Anabasis, a man is left behind because he can't go any longer. He says the mule driver agreed to bury him alive in order that he might not perish. But as they stood by his leg, all of them cried out "I'm not dead" And then Xenophon said it was for your own good if you got beaten up -- tough love. After this, some guys stand up and talk about how Xenophon did them a good turn here and there. The soldiers acquit Xenophon, so to speak.
