Is Paternalism Polluting the Company?

People are motivated by three main things. They're motivated by growth, the ability to have relationships with others and control over their lives. So that self determination is really basic to human centred design. In almost every company i've been at, a lot of founders feel like they have that paternalistic ownership ofth the idea of being an owner might even be a pollutin. And so engagement is a metric for the company where you do get higher performance. The correlations are crazy when people are highly engaged. It doesn't mean they're going beyond expectations, necessarily. It just means thei're giving you really good work and discretionary effort isn't extra but fulfilling.
