Hua Shoe is a professor of English at Bard College and staff writer for The New Yorker. His father moved to the United States from Taiwan when he was in his early 20s. He became an engineer, but eventually decided that there were better opportunities elsewhere. "I do feel indebted to them in some way," Hua says about his immigrant parents.
