People feel like they don't really matter to anybody else, whether in their own family or their community or society at large. And that is something that underpins deaths of despair, which are really deaths of sort of a spiritual nature. It's consistent with Durkheim's conception of suicide, which is that it occurs in the context of a social network that's failed to provide meaning and structure to the individual.
