The Rise and Fall of Oslo

Oslo was built to defend against the Danes, but also a good place to attack them from. The first ruler who made Oslo their permanent residence was King Haukon Magnussen. He ruled in the late 1200s and the early 1300s. This is when the Akushus castle and fortress starts to be built. It was first besieged in 1308 by a Swedish prince called Erich. That was the first of many sieges, often by the Swedes, occasionally by the Danes.
