The Transformation of Character in Ulysses
Bloom's gesture of fatherly compassion for Stephen, the youth who is clearly in spiritual trouble and could have been, given his age, Bloom's own son. The transformation of both men has begun. There are critics who have written that Ulysses isn't a novel because there is no transformation of character. Sympathy breaks the self-containment of Stephen and Bloom. Any object intensely regarded may be a gate of access to the incorruptible eon of the gods.
