Chris Acker: I had an idea to write a story about the Amazon jungle. The novel was going to take place in the 1960s and it was about this spinster in Minnesota who worked for a large international construction company. In the meantime, I put away my novel because something had come up in my personal life and my then partner was facing being deported from the country. He has a son who's a bit duplicitous; he gets a contract to go down and build a highway through the Amazon but fails miserably. When we met Anne Patchett again only for the second time of our acquaintance, she told us that she'd started working on a novel about the Amazon Jungle
