The elections took place with chile still in the shadow of deadly protests. More than a million people took to the streets, frustrated with the country's deep inequalities. To restore calm, leaders agreed to rewrite the country's constitution. That pro was intended to bring some political and social stability. But constitutional reform is now tied up with heavily polarized politics. The run off election in december is only likely to deepen the country's divisions.
