We spend years being inculcated with all the norms and attitudes of our groups. It's hardly surprising, in some ways, that the groups can have really powerful effects on us. The finding is that people will judge the distance of sort of competitor or threatening out group members as closer than they actually are. So for example, if you're a yankees fan, you judge fenway as being much closer than it actually is.
