Auschwitz was of course located in Poland. Why did the Nazis build their most notorious death camps in Poland and not back in Germany? They're partially out of a worry that ordinary Germans would not tolerate it. But as it turned out later on when they built a notorious death camp just outside Munich, turned out people knew about it and accepted it. And so there it was, people living there and not realising what was coming down the road.
