Psychologist Barbara Yoon has written a book about luck and randomness. She says we tend not to like things that are unpredictable, because they're seen as threatening. The fear of the unknown may be our most basic fear - it underlies every other fear you learn. We also do it by labelling what we don't understand in an attempt to reduce uncertainty.
