Herbert Spenser and the Influence of Nature on Science

Herbert spencer comes to mind because this period of 18 seventyes, 18 eighties is so critical for what we might call present day science. And in the controversy surrounding him, there as his publication of first principles in one of his books. The whole controversy that went on for months in the pages of nature really revolved around his qualifications to be talking about physics at all. So it's a moment where you really see the increasing specialization of science. You see that you can't really be a generalist any more and expect to be taken seriously by people who worked exclusively on physics problems y.
