In 1986, Paulafort was working for a client named Jonah Savimbi who had become an anti-communist warlord. So he hired him to charm journalists and politicians with the hope of getting aid from the US government in order to continue perpetrating his war. The firm's fee for such services was reportedly $600,000. Bob Dole at the time was a Senate majority leader. He introduced a congressional resolution backing Savimbi that was his insurgency.
