Was It a Pragmatic Thing to Not Harm the Crew?

One interesting thing i noticed about the alabama when they raided is that they didn't harm captured ships crews or passengers. They just detaind them on neutral ships or placed them ashore in a friendly or neutral port. Was this simply so they didn't have to do they think that it would cause too much damage if they did harm the crew, or cause the ire or anger of the union against them?
