The most valuable slaves tended to be women, so actually more women were enslaved than men. And then there's another category we shouldn't forget about, which is men who were not considered to be suitable for military service. These are people who, as a result of their disfigurement, are not really, you know, they cannot compete for power. So it was standard practice for a new Sultan to put his siblings to death on his accession, so that there were no rivals.
