When some people can see that they are making a meaningful contribution towards something that matters, it is almost always energizing, not deflating. Like the Make-A-Wish Foundation, they hold their volunteers to such high standards that the volunteers love working there because they know it matters and there's a lot expected of them. Whereas if you lower the standards for a volunteer will turn people away. It'll just turn the volunteers that aren't that committed away. And you kind of have to have the courage to do that.
