The Life and Times of John Johnson

Johnson thought he ought to be a schoolmaster, because it was a way of handing on the cultural heritage. He'd had a tri-at it in Marquette Bosworth, where he'd gone as a choror or assistant teacher. But then when Johnson married in 1735, his wife, a widow, Tettie Porter, brought with her 600 pounds and he used that to start a school at Edgill near Litchfield. The boys made fun of him and so on, and we actually know more about the Johnson's bedroom than we really do about the school room.
