What's the Difference Between Teaching and Research?

I was really intrigued when I read Callen Newport's Deep Work about how you that's your teaching work in the fall semester and research work in the spring and summer semesters. Is that still what you do? It is. Every year I redesign 20% of the course, but I don't want to subject the students to the terrible ideas that I've had every year. So I figure if 80% stays constant, then there's at least some major elements that are tried and true that have gone reasonably well.
