The Downfalls of Civilization
The idea that we could learn things from the past, from our culture was somehow lost. Once you lose that connection with your own tradition, with your own culture, the people is destroyed. And tyrants know that. They set about destroying it. If you want the plant to grow up a wall, the good gardener trains it gradually up the wall. It doesn't cut it off at the roots and stick it on the wall because it doesn't have a plant anymore.
