The Shirtwaist Factory Fire
The Shirtwaist factory fire in 1911 killed 146 garment workers. Investigators determined that the fire was likely an accident, but doors had not been locked. Max Blank and Isaac Harris were later found reliable for the wrongful deaths by a civil suit. The plaintiffs were awarded $75 per life lost because of the owner's negligent actions.
