Introduction
In 162 AD, Galen set out for Rome from his home city of Pergamum in the east of the Roman Empire. At the time, this was an arduous journey, most of which was overland and would have taken several months across difficult terrain. Prominently, while the Roman Empire may have claimed to have made the road safe, this was far from absolute and bandits were of constant danger. On another occasion, Galen claims that an innkeeper offered him pork, which was in fact human flesh. He studied in Corinth, Crete, Cylicia, Smyrna and Cyprus before visiting the great medical city of Alexandria in Roman Egypt. This was an unusually long course
