The Existential Concept of Anxiety

Psychology as a discipline doesn't split off from philosophy until a few decades later. Only then does it become a science. So the existential concept of anxiety predates the psychological concept of anxiety. If you're an existentialist who sees anxiety as an expression of our humanity, then getting rid of anxiety is not, in fact, a good thing. That's the moment in which you lose that which is uniquely human. The problem with medical approaches to anxiety is that they never get at the root of the problem. They just sedate our symptoms.
