Black Elk participated in the Little Big Horn, but he was only 10 years old at that time. At the time Lakota males were reckoned to have come of age when they were around 12 or 13. In his book Black Elk Speaks, John Nihart reports Black Elk as saying: Soon the soldiers were all crowded into the river and many Lakota's too.
