In 1890-1900, there is fresh memory of the Civil War in which the nation was never more divided. We would have to have 30, 40 million immigrants a year to match what was happening then. Woodrow Wilson really only becomes president because the Republican party is so divided that you've got a number of Republicans who could never fathom leaving the party. It's one of the most unique elections in American history.
