There's no reason to think that we're even a halfway stage in the emergence of complexity. Our fate as humans is of galactic importance not just the rest of the importance because if we wipe ourselves out that would destroy these potentialities. I think it is much worse to envisage wiping out everyone than having a catastrophe which is a setback to civilization. We are so interconnected by telecommunications, supply chains, air travel and everything else so things would spread globally.
