Mears' Autobiography
Muir's journal was written hastily during pauses in his long march. He apparently intended to use this raw material at some time for another book. The last chapter was first published as an article in the Overland Monthly of July 1872. A revised copy of the printed article, found among Mears' literary effects, has been made the basis of the chapter on Twenty Hill Hollow as it appears in this volume.
