Stephen colbert grew up just outside of charleston, south carolina. His family pronounced their last name colbert the irish way,. But stephen's dad told the kids it was up to them how they wanted to pronounce it. So right before he headed off to college, stephen colbert decided to become stephen colbertson. In college at northwestern in chicago that stephen started to seriously think about pursuing some type of career in entertainment. At first, though, he shied away from doing comedy.
