Nixon's Trip to China
Mao feared American support for the Taiwanese independence movement, and he thought escape of this Pung Ming Min seemed like proof of American involvement. Kissinger strongly denied American involvement and promised that no American personnel or agency would help support the Taiwan independence movement. Zhou Enlai was still not placated. Nixon's trip to China was a massive news story, particularly for television. 1972 was the year that the sales of color television sets in the US surpassed black and white ones.
