The Black Legend of the Spanish Colonies
Tales of Spanish cruelty in the early colonies were usually paired with descriptions of torture from the Spanish inquisition to create an impression that the Spanish were particularly evil. These negative depictions of the Spanish were embraced in many Protestant parts of Europe as they fit a larger reformation narrative about how inherently evil the Catholic faith was. The black legend became quite popular in England, where it was often employed to justify the English colonial project.
