CHAPTER

The Norse Creation Myth

Ictra-sil was believed to be an enormous ash tree, with three roots reaching down into deep wells in the underworld. The branches of the tree reached upward into the airy realms and the heavens. It was constantly fed upon by creatures and monsters of various sorts, but it always healed and regenerated itself. Arranged around the roots of the tree, the trunk, and the branches are the nine cosmic realms, the homes of various gods, monsters, and men. Norse creation myth is highly complex, and it is described, albeit in a somewhat vague and confusing way, in two books called the Eddas.
