Introduction

Jerry Lieber and Mike Stuller started out as songwriters for Big Mama Thornton. They had a hit with Riot in Cell Block number 9 by the Robins, but saw no money from it. Their business associate Lester Sill suggested they form their own record company. The two formed Spark Records and Quintet Publishing to produce R&B music.
