How Do Armies Fare Differently on the Battlefield?

Much of the literature on military effect looks at armies in terms of their killing ability, or what we call the loss exchange ratio. We want to know how many soldiers die on one side versus the otherandnd, that matters for ah, for military effectiveness. But it's not the only measure. And in fact, historically, armies have done lots of interesting things on a battleeld for which we have no data and no real theorizing. So when i talk about battlefield performance, it's partly about the coercive capacity of the army,. How much punishment can it inflict on the other side? Ad and how much can it safeguard its own soldiers?
