Introduction

Gaius Marius was elected consul for the first time in 109 BC. His ambition and willingness to act on that ambition set him apart from his colleagues. In 107 BC, Rome faced a very real threat in the resurgent Gauls. The Roman officers left standing were only able to save their defeated troops by having them pass under the yoke - a humiliating ritual for the proud Romans.
