The Importance of Defamiliarization in Art

I think I've recorded a little bit on Schlowski, but if I haven't, I'll link to whatever I've done about him. He's a Russian formalist critic from the early part of the 20th century. And he thinks that Tolstoy is finding mechanisms of like making familiar things unfamiliar or defamiliarizing the Russian word is astranagnie. So for example, in Hajimirot, he has this guy up in the Caucasus. A kind of like alien landed on Earth kind of trope,. which of course, lots of fiction uses these kind of things.
