Whether Machiavelli Was a Republican or Not?

The question is not really whether machiavelli was a republican, it is rather precisely what form of republic did he want. And this turns out to be a highly contested question. Running throughout the history of renaissance republicanism was the tension between broad and narrow government. It seems clear that in the discourses at least, machiavelle wants to give the people much more power than that.
