How the Texas Longhorn Caused the Cattle Boom
The main breed that allowed this cattle boom was what we call the Texas Longhorn, which is a type of relatively small, narrow bodied and very hardy cattle. Some ranchers began to hire teams of these buccarou to undertake large droves to move thousands of cattle at a time. The Civil War ended up massively spurring on this cattle boom. By the end of the war in 1865 there are massive free moving, free roaming basically feral cattle herds all over Texas and even further west.
