The Spartan Strategy in the Battle of Meledus

The letters of Paderitus denouncing Astiocus were the catalyst for a policy shift that was already well underway. The Spartans began to grow suspicious of their navarks intentions, though they likely already had grown dissatisfied with this performance thus far. Still, faced with pressure from his allies and likely the fear of criticism, or worse, from back in Sparta, Astiocus finally capitulated and began to make preparations to sell to Chios. With Chios under siege, the Peloponnesian fleet accomplished in little, and negotiations with Persia only produced unsatisfactory agreements and unreliable support.
