Gene Roddenberry wanted Jeffrey Hunter to play the lead in his new series, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" He says he auditioned for the role alone at Paramount and was turned down. Hunter went on to do three years of summer theater before being cast in a space-themed show that never aired.
