The Golden Age of Black Television

The Wayans Brothers attracted young black viewers to the WB, establishing the new network as a player in the competitive TV space. The changes began when UPN and the WB started to see big ratings for teen shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Today, Black TV is exploding once again. It can be seen everywhere from traditional networks and cable channels to streamers. In 1997, there were 21 shows with black lead characters, compared to 1990 when there were just eight shows with black leads.
