Suffering just means not getting your way. Richard Roor also says that great love and great suffering is how God comes to us. When things don't go your way, it's this reminder to come back into being. I'm oddly grateful for some of the most painful experiences that I've ever had in my life. But our spiritual qualities of compassion, wisdom, kindness, humility, honesty, these qualities get honed by suffering.
