How would you collect that data? That's a hard one. You can look at societies that do and don't have prostitution to see if attitudes towards sex change in a way that is measurable or meaningful. But it depends on who you're talking to and which data set they're using, right? Well, this raises an issue that I, I try to emphasize in the book too: If really smart people and really well-informed people are in fundamental disagreement, don't waste your time. The probability of you being wrong is maybe close to 50%.

Why do we feel like in order to be productive, happy, or good, we must sacrifice everything else? Is it possible to feel all three at once? Without even knowing it, we’re doing things everyday to sabotage ourselves and our societies, habits that prevent us from optimizing long term happiness. Jim Davies is a full professor at the Institute of Cognitive Science at Carleton University and the School of Computer Science. He is the director of the Science of Imagination Laboratory and he co-hosts, along with Dr. Kim Hellemans, the podcast Minding the Brain.
