The Paradox of Modernism

John Kerr: Modernism is linked up with the city, and there's nothing more modern than the modern cosmopolis. He says Woolf and Joyce celebrate speed and motion; Lawrence loads the cinema because it brings a light into dark places which should remain dark. The First World War has a lot as it were of input in this story - its technologization helped kick consciousness into a kind of deep hostility to the modern.
