My takeaway was slightly different, which is if you recall early in the book, they pose three groups trying to create digital life and doing it different ways. I think this is revealing like his preference. He's like, well, if the experience from the perspective of the consciousness is the same, then you may as well create it in a way that minimizes suffering. Right. Because it feels real. And that wouldn't you know, it's interesting going back to like, what did you regret most about permutation city? If you had written it that way, it would not have been very compelling.

When you modeled digestion and metabolism, no nutrients were consumed – no real digestion took place. So, when you modeled the human brain, why should you expect real thought to occur?”

(46:08) There's a baseline risk for being alive. You can try to get all of your life risks to zero, but it is best to accept that there will always be some general risk.
