The Disadvantages of Social Media in History

I see expressions of ad hominem, anger, on their really quite abusive from people. It's happening in politics a lot where people are simply unable to listen to the other side. Even when they're democratic politicians it becomes increasingly difficult for anyone to have a serious honest and informed debate. And that's because anger intrudes all too easily. There's a kind of righteous anger that pervades the way they're talking. I really, really fear for a discipline like history which is absolutely dependent on vigorous and open debate. If it becomes ensnared by this anger by ad hominem abuse, it will kill the discipline and it won't just be history.
