Lewis is trying to draw a distinction between sort of snobbery that we don't want to embrace. He calls out people in here who just like to read literature to pass the time. The share mark of an unlitery man is that he considers, I've read it already, to be a conclusive argument against reading a work again. And so Lewis is totally saying, no, let's redefine the terms.
