The Tensions of the Red Summer
For many, Williams' death was a microcosm of the longstanding violence perpetrated against black people without consequence. The National World War I Museum of Memorial says this, likely the deadliest incident of the red summer occurred in and around Elaine Arkansas after a white law officer was killed in a shootout outside of black sharecropper gathering. Estimates vary as to how many African Americans were killed, but upwards of 200 are believed to have lost their lives.
