The Mount Palomar Telescope
The 200-inch hail telescope on Mount Palomar is the most beautiful piece of technology ever built. Unlike today's telescopes which are certainly more powerful, the hail is breathtakingly elegant. The classically proportioned dome is large enough to cast the central behemoth into shadow. And the telescope itself is long enough to make it feel that you're actually citing the stars.
